Sunscreen and Sun Protection Products for Baby

Many parents are very concerned about how to protect baby from sun’s rays. The baby’s skin is naturally delicate and if he doesn’t have any sun protection, it is very easy to get sunburn … So it is important for parents to know the sun protection knowledge in advance!

Here is the list of some “knowledge points” of baby sun protection for parents:

  • There are 2 basic methods of baby sun protection: Physical shielding and Sunscreen application;
  • For newborns and babies under 6 months, it is best not to apply sunscreen. Physical protection measures such as wearing a sun hat, wearing long-sleeved clothes, and using stroller sun shade are better options;
  • For parents of babies 6 months or older, you can apply a baby safe sunscreen with SPF 30–50 to all exposed areas of your little one’s body. It is recommended to choose a physical sunscreen with mild ingredients;
  • Baby sunscreens usually only need to be washed off with clean water or a mild baby shower gel, and do not require any adult makeup remover or facial cleanser.

Now we know some basic sun protection knowledge, the next step is to prepare all kinds of sun protection products for your baby!

Sunscreen

It is recommended that parents consider first to choose physical sunscreen on your baby, and finally chemical sunscreen. Physical(Mineral) sunscreen is relatively less irritating to baby’s delicate skin.

The higher SPF index of baby sunscreen doesn’t mean it’s better for your baby. The sun screen should be selected according to the specific occasion. For most people (whether it is a baby or an adult), using SPF 15 or 30 sunscreen products in daily life is enough, and you don’t need to pursue a high SPF index. I prefer SPF 30 sunscreen and apply more often.

Sunhat

The parts behind the baby’s ears and necks are most easily overlooked when applying sunscreen. And normal clothes don’t cover these two places, so wearing a sun hat can protect these parts well.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses can really protect your baby’s eyes from the direct sun light, especially in places where the ultraviolet reflection is particularly strong. Babies more than 6 months old can wear sunglasses, and should choose sunglasses with UVA and UVB protection of more than 97%.

Sun/UV protection clothing

When choosing a special UV protection clothing, pay attention to the UV protection index indicated by the material of the clothing. UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) index indicates how much of the sun’s UV radiation is absorbed by the fabric. For example, a fabric with a UPF rating of 50 only allows 1/50th of the sun’s UV radiation to pass through it.  Generally UPF30+ means a good sun protection index.
